{March 13, 2008}   Profiling a Server

Well as every one can see from my last blog entry I am a server at Outback Steak House. For my profile I decided to observe other servers. I really think this is such a great topic to write about because many people do not know how hard it is to be a server. I want to enlighten everyone who has no idea about serving, but seems to think that they know it all. I know for this assignment we should have picked something unfamiliar because it could become more interesting to us, but I think this is a great topic and I feel I know a lot, but I could learn a lot more. I have so many idea of how to do this paper the though part is going to be picking which way. The plan behind this topic is to get many people to read it using this blogging thing and hopefully I won’t have to write more blogs of me complaining about my job and the terrible customers I have to encounter. Don’t get me wrong there are some great people who I get to serve on but it is always the handful that ruins it for servers.

Now I was thinking about starting my piece with something about people eating in a restaurant. May be I could start with describing a restaurant and people sitting at tables. Then I could write about what they are saying, how they like their service, what they think of the place, stuff like that. Then I could rewind everything and instead of writing about all the people sitting at the tables being served, I could follow what a server does from when they leave the table until they go back. I could intertwine the two groups to make an interesting comparison. By doing this everyone who reads see both view points and can see everything that goes on behind the scenes in restaurants and all the work that going into people getting the great meal they have in front of them.

I could so see this being in a Sunday paper as an article. It is like without the servers no one would be able to go out to eat. Going out to eat is a two way street. It’s the customer and the server. Each has two completely different points of view of each other. Sometimes they agree, but this is rare. I hope by writing this piece I can get people to see all the difficulties that servers go through. I also hope that it will enlighten people when they leave a tip at the end of their meal.

I plan on doing a lot of research. This entails finding if other people have written on the topic, interviewing people in the profession, going out to eat and observing the profession, and trying to prove my thesis. By the way if you haven’t figured it out by now my thesis going to go something like this: Servers have to do hard work, deal with great customers and rude customers, and need to be more appreciated. I believe the end is going to be the hardest thing to prove.
